    Mess Kit

As you might guess, almost all of my gear in my assault pack/72 hour bag came from the Army. As a Boy Scout and later in the Army, I used a mess kit and a canteen cup. They are heavy and clunky, but oh so dependable. Now days, I use my bag regularly when doing game management and hunting. Sometimes I'm just too tired to drive home and if I have someone to take care of Addie, I'll camp out for the night and listen to Coast to Coast AM (my guilty pleasure). Enough rambling.....I'm looking to upgrade and lighten the load. Do you have any recommendations for a backpacking mess kit? Is titanium or stainless steel the better choice?

Give a man a match, & he'll be warm for 20 seconds. But toss that man a white phosphorus grenade and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

I have an MSR stainless pot. I can fit one of their 8oz. fuel canisters in it for a pocket rocket stove, and some other miscellaneous stuff.

It's just the pot, which is fine for solo hikes. I might get something with plates that nestle inside.

      I don't know.

Snow Peak Kettle #1 may be the answer to your prayers.
            Its:
            -A personal/signal mirror
            -A cooking pot
            -A coffee/tea pot&kettle
            -A cup
            -A storage vessle

But if you just boil water then a Ti cup from Toaks is the way to go. I do not recommend you do any real food cooking in a Ti pot over uncontrolled heat. If you plan to really cook something then SS is the only way to go in terms of cleanup and durability with moderate heat dispersion. Aluminum is decent too if you are into that kind of thing, but harder to clean.

I agree with others that Stainless Steel is the way to got. I've got an aluminum kit that I bought at walmart for 5 bucks, but it's for backup.

I have a stainless nestled kit. Love it. it came from walmart, but I have added to it and tossed out pieces to the point that it isn't the same as I bought it.....

Thanks for the ideas. I'm not doing any serious cooking. I usually fix ramen, rice, or oatmeal. Of course, I have to make hot chocolate or tea to drink too.

Have you listened to Art Bell since he's returned? Some places have him on AM radio, others it's just over the net

We can't get Midnight in the Desert with Art Bell over the radio around here. I'll check it on the net sometime. I really should have done it already....
