When I learned of these a few years back I was kicking myself! Time and again these were helpful in getting a campfire started, especially when I got my place up in the PNW.
Here's how you do it:
If you pre-prepare cotton balls with petroleum jelly smeared onto it you are good to go, almost!
Just some flint and (magnesium) striker ignition and your firelighting just became akin to childsplay.
Trying to do this without petroleum jelly means it's more difficult to raise the flashpoint of the cotton wool ball and fire etc.
Carrying a bag of these prepped cotton wool balls means you'll not have a nightmare of trying to start a fire with wet tinder, bark etc.
