Just wondered how many of you outdoorsy types forages either on a regular basis or for shits and giggles, I like free food it plays an important part of my prepping plan
I pick crabapples, persimmons, scuppernogs, and blackberries where I come across them. I like to make jellies and sometimes a little wine. Course the coons, possums, and deer beat me most of the time. Plus, Addie got a little more girlie and won't climb trees for me like she use to.
Give a man a match, & he'll be warm for 20 seconds. But toss that man a white phosphorus grenade and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
The sweetest berries are the wild ones. One of the best pies I've ever made was with roadside blackberries, mulberries, and yellow raspberries from behind the turkey shed. My kids were raised eating mulberries, and they're as tall as me now. Sometimes in June, all three of us will be standing on the four wheeler stretching for the high ones. Funny sight to see, I'm sure.
Morels are fun to find, but I don't care much for them. We give most of them away.
Let's see, I've made salad from dandelions, it was a little bitter and a lot of work. Too much work.
I hike a lot. When I take my kids and their cousins, I point out all the wild edibles I can find. I hope they remember some.
nothing better than morels, black berries and rasberries. i used to get gallons of all of them. now not so much. i do like getting apples from peoples trees and making pies. you can get loads of apples from people by just asking. most dont give a shit. can store them for a long time in winter if you do it rightt. i get walnuts at times. woods around here full of walnut trees. just have to fight the squirrels for them. its just a pain in the ass getting the nuts out of them. my friend has this drum that spins around that gets the nuts out. it is really annoying. you can hear it for blocks. im sure the neighbors love him. i also forage for fish. i hate eating fish, but can trade it for pork.

On the John Muir trail around Cathedral lake and the Tuolomne Meadows area, there are wild grapes (niagara I think) that are scattered everywhere. Miles and miles of wild grapes clinging to eveything. Spending a few days there I can forage grapes and catch lots of fish, and end up coming home a fatty. JMTcathedrallake2012necio.jpg
