Nothing wrong with a good maglite. I've got three or four of them that I've collected over the years. The thing is that flashlight technology has come so far that you can get the same performance in much smaller and cheaper packages. I carried a hundred dollar Streamlight for years, but shit, my little Cree can throw almost as much light for much less money.
No argument there, these little lights that are available now are a lot brighter than the small lights I had back in the day and the battery life is better too
Out here in the Alaskan bush you learn quick that you can't rely on consistent power. Nothing like staggering through the house during a whiteout blizzard in search of a flashlight. I have a 6 pack of the CREE flashlights stashed around the house, a couple of the baton/maglites, and several dynamo flashlights along with both oil and dynamo lanterns in each room.
I have the emergency plug in flash lights that come on when unplugged or the power goes off. I don't want to fall and break a leg because I was looking for a flashlight in the dark.

I have one of those in those in the bedroom. Also have a lab/husky that seems to think its funny to unplug anything plugged in that she can reach.
