    Baofeng UV-5R

I just recently won a bid for a Baofeng UV-5R 136-174/400-520MHz DTMF CTCSS; a complete set up.

Anyone have one/use one and can tell me what you think of them?

I'm thinking of buying another one, for my woman to use.

There's a set of 4 complete sets, for $21.49 + $13 or so for taxes.

I was thinking, one for each EDC/GHB and BOB; as well as the 5th one for the kid's dufflebag.

Are they fairly easy to use, or a pain in the ass? I heard that they need software updates? I downloaded the user manual, so I can read more about em.

For our first HAM setups, would these be fairly beneficial or no?

It's not the size of the dog, in the fight. It's the size of the fight, in the dog.

No guts, no glory. All pain, and fury.

They are great. Especially if you buy the whip antenna. I have a few. I have about 22 people I wheel with that all have them. I have other more expensive radios and these stand up to all of them.

I will link to a good cable and software deal when I get back on my PC. I whole family has these.

Sounds like it would be a decent radio to use, right on. Confirms my suspicions.

I can't figure out how to program them to the local repeater and the weather spotter frequencies around here. I need to get my license, but in the mean time I want to listen.
Give a man a match, & he'll be warm for 20 seconds. But toss that man a white phosphorus grenade and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

Pm me what town you are in and I will try to find out for you. The repeater probably has a tone. The weather should be easy though..... I have weather in mine but only on the receive. I didn't even put in a transmit frequency for it so I didn't accidentally key up that channel.

I gotta figure out the same time, once mine finally gets here.

I was just looking up examiners in my province; all of them are 8+ hours away.

So I'll be listening for awhile, until I buy a vehicle.

                    Which is fine by me.

I've been doing a lot of reading, and need to do a lot more reading; so I'll know everything about what I need to get for a decent rig. So far, I'll be using these as 2-ways and listening.

I wanna be able to listen to the local police/EMS/etc too, so I gotta figure all that out.
