    Leaky basement

The girlfriends basement leaks every time it rains.

I cleaned the gutters out, still leaks.

Then I noticed the rubber membrane (flat roof) was just lapped over the fascia board with no drip edging. The edge of the membrane was touching the fascia board about 1/2" above the gutter. So I installed a strip of flashing to bridge the gap and prevent water from going behind the gutter. There's been a long history of this particular gutter dripping massive amounts of water.

Today was the first day it rained since I worked on it. All the water is draining properly and the basement isn't leaking.

    Total cost $30

I roofed houses one summer with a pothead in the 80's, so I actually understand all of what you just said.

Next project is replacing a bad portion of the subfloor near the bathroom. I notice when I step on it the floor boards flex a bit and I'm worried I'll end up falling through.

Make sure you install hidden cashe spots while you are at it.

I wish you would quit these projects. You are making the rest of us look bad.
Give a man a match, & he'll be warm for 20 seconds. But toss that man a white phosphorus grenade and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

Shut the fuck up, blade. You just lived through a stroke. You're a salty bastard. He's just learning to play with a hammer and a screwdriver.

I had a leak on the lifestyle block. There was an odd shape of guttering, which I suspected, especially as one of the leaks was right underneath it. Was told don't be stupid by the men.

cut to a couple of years later, i'm leaving the husband, breaking up, have to sell the house. 'screw it' I think. 'it can't hurt'. Climb the 10 ft ladder fully extended (20 ft) with ex husband holding bottom. I was insured for I think $250,000 at the time and shit scared he'd kill me. Got right up there with a can of expanding filla, poked it into the weird shaped guttering, sprayed it in till it was full and got the hell off that roof as fast as I bloody could while Matthew had come round to see what was going on and his father couldn't accidentally push the ladder over. ex hubby wouldn't climb ladders, he was afraid of heights (*stopping to ask who the fuck is NOT afraid of heights?)

No more leaks after that. Not on that side of the house, not on the other.
