    Small game hunting

I love big game, but let's face it, it's usually pretty boring and has a relatively low success rate. Small game is usually a good bet though, and if I were hunting to put food on the table, I'd go after small game every single time. It's cheap and you don't have to bother with half the equipment the big game guys fool with, and it's a heck of a lot easier to get your catch out of the woods. What's your favorite small game? How do you hunt, with dogs or stalking? One of my earliest memories was sitting in the woods on an autumn morning in Indiana with my dad and an old single shot .410 shotgun. I don't remember if we got anything, but it was still fun. I squirrel hunt every year, but I use a .22 now. I'd rabbit hunt too but we just don't have many around here.

I'm more into duck and goose hunting than little critters. Sometimes turkeys.

I never ever liked squirrel. I have had rattlesnake once and that was okay. I went on my first Elk Hunt back in November, we were unsuccessful though. The Elk stayed up at 11,000' and the temperature didn't drop low enough they pretty much stayed pretty high. You say half the equipment the big boys use for big game and I assume your talking about atv's, side by sides, toy haulers etc. You don't need any of that. I think it would be cool to kill one right at dusk and then camp out so bears/cougars/wolfs etc don't eat it but hoping it would attract a Squatch.

I started out hunting with a Savage 24 that was a 22 over a 410. Best squirrel gun I ever had. I still hunt squirrel and rabbit when I get a chance. I could easily get my limit on squirrels everyday in my neighborhood, but my daughters won't let me touch their "pets".

Yes, I'm a slave to the squirrels, chickens, birds, cats, and hermit crabs. I'm permitted to live here as long as I prepare their meals, clean cages, and exercise them.
Give a man a match, & he'll be warm for 20 seconds. But toss that man a white phosphorus grenade and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

I've successfully hunted squirrels, muskrats, and pheasants with nothing but hand thrown rocks. A good sized rock, thrown like a baseball. I didn't like muskrat. Pheasants are good eating.

I've shot a porcupine once, about 200 yards out, while it was in a tree; with a scoped .22lr. It's head looked like a squirrel's to me at that range, I think that was one of my best shot's and it was probably more luck than anything. My Hutterite friend and I, were out hunting for squirrel. I missed one that was 10 feet away, using a scope. He took the porcupine home and ate it.

I wanna do some small game hunting with a bow.
It's not the size of the dog, in the fight. It's the size of the fight, in the dog.

No guts, no glory. All pain, and fury.

I've tried to hunt rabbits by trying to catch them. They're too fast.

Try for the fool birds (Spruce Grouse/Rough Hens) if you have them in your area. They can't fly far, and they're incredibly slow on the ground. We used to catch 'em as kids.

When I worked at a summer camp there was one guy who had a pet squirrel named Flip Flop and he let it go free on the camp. The problem was that it had no fear of people so it would jump on campers as they hiked. One time it jumped on a kid and he freaked out and swatted at it and the squirrel bit him. Then the camp had to give the squirrel .22 reasons to quit jumping on campers to avoid a lawsuit.
