    okay MY homestead now

Right guys, I have a back yard, entirely empty but for a shed and a couple of flax bushes which are actually a very good breed for weaving. I don't much want them there, but I don't want to get rid of them either... they're about 1m from a boundary.

anyway I'm considering setting up the garden, and haven't dug it yet due to having to go save the ex husband who popped a varicose vein (oooooh yuck! the blood!) dear sweet jesus roll over csi I can't get over the spray all over the walls and the carpet and bedroom and the pools of coagulated... and the spray on the taps and the bath and the vanity and the toilet paper and the

Yes anyway no garden dug yet, and I'm perving at these.

    The question is: which one?

The lovebirds are leaving, so it will just be me. I do like some sweetcorn, and I do like the native potatoes I grow. So 2/3 going in carbs until I find a way to go on a low carb diet for the good of my health (don't hold your breath.)

how big? One person. and am I just being stupid? I've never used a shade house before but I'm really taken by the whole 'this is the garden area' kind of compartmentalised factor.

In winter you can put clear plastic on and have your tomatoes (and your whitefly and your aphids I imagine) and in summer you can put the green cloth on and have shade.

I have had a glasshouse before and they're wonderful but they don't need to be all that huge.

But I so like the 'this is my garden' factor. and the neighbour's dog who comes into my yard and pulls the washing off the line won't be able to get IN with the shade cloth.

Speak to me o people of the interwebs.

    wassitgonnabe?

It's windy down there right? Which one will withstand the wind best?

it's not too windy in naenae. It's quite idyllic. Used to be the market garden area for Wellington before they chopped it up for housing.

It's a wet place, and there are very steep mountains to the south so sunlight is ever so slightly limited at dawn and quite limited in the evening but brilliant all day.

It's an old river delta. loamy. I think the house is sinking.

I wouldn't know about that personally but I have been told that what we drink and eat affects the flavor.

Sure. Much like what you watered affects the flavour of the watermelon you eat. Which is to say, not much.

Now, let's drag your mind off the topic of your own cum, which you can experiment with on your own time eating asparagus and broccoli and then taste testing the results.

Let's drag it back onto the topic of gardens, specifically mine, and what the fuck I am supposed to do.

I was thinking about the warm mouth of a woman who knows what she is doing down there to be honest and I kind of enjoy thread derailing but back to the subject you chose.

It isn't that windy so how much space do you have and what is your budget? I remember what someone I worked for once said when designing a new warehouse. You will always need more space than you expect so go ahead and build it to account for future growth,

HMM. some sense out of you at last I get. accounting for growth makes sense.

Have you ever had a shade house? Are they any good? Budget is fine, those things are only $500. to put that in perspective I'm capable of saving $200 a fortnight out of my wages for non-essentials. It's not wonderful but it's not starvation.

The property itself is nearly 500m2. That's 1/8 acre. The back yard is a little over half of that. I'd say 1/32 acre is what I have to play with. I'll try for photos tomorrow in the daylight.

machine is saying 1350 square feet. That gives me the other 1/32 acre for washing line, playing, a couple of trees.

I've never had a screen house. It gets cold here in winter so glass greenhouses are more popular.

Those things aren't very secure either. You did have your property fenced a while back didn't you.

If I may share another anecdote, we had some of the best pecan trees in our yard when I was young. The nuts were sweet and thin shelled. One morning I walked out the back yard and found neighbors in the yard picking up nuts. They weren't happy just picking up nuts that fell across the property line. They immediately moved across to their yard and I recommended that they not come back.

                        - Kale. So easy to plant. Only 3 kale plants and I had kale for dinner everyday for the whole 2 months!
                        - Purple potatoes. A 10 sqft (~ 1 m2) area yielded about 18 kg of purple potatoes. They are delicious!!!

we have six foot fences on 3 perimeters here. Wooden palings 10mm apart. So no picking up fruit. I doubt I could fit pecan trees tho.

oh man past my bedtime. goodnight!
