    Maters are doing nicely

I should have a good crop this year. Hardly got anything last year so I got all the same kind (Early Girl) this year hoping for better pollination. Have lots of green maters on the vines so it wont be long before harvest time!
    Screw diplomacy...........bring it!

I haven't grown any in a few years but the first time I did after moving into this neighborhood all of my neighbors were surprised at how many maters I had on my plants. If the bees weren't getting the job done I would take a cotton swab out and cross pollinate them myself.

Early girls wre sweet but not real big. I planted 2 or 4 of them. I have beefsteaks, better boy vf, cherry toms to snack on while gardening and my favorite all around, Celebrities.

I've learned that Early Girls, Better Boys etc are much better than Beefsteaks, I would rather have 10 Early Girls over 1 Beefsteak.

Big slab of beefsteak on toast with mayo. You can have your ten twinkies.

The Beefsteaks look great, it's just that you get 5 times the weight in an Early Girl or Better Boy, for the same effort.

How do they taste, and are they any good for sauce?

I can't wait. The early girls come first and they are sweet as pie, the texture though on the beefs and celebrities is nonpariel.

For sauce I think you need to be raising Romas...

I have a few this year for the first time.

There are tons of really good tomatoes out there. I'm not growing as much this year, but I put in a few different varieties. A nursery not too far from me has a good selection of heirlooms, as well as favorites. Black Krim are good if you like the dark tomatoes.
                        I don't know.

I like Romas. They are a decent size for using a whole one at the table, so no half tomato in the fridge.

They do make the best sauce, and are also extremely good by the slice.

The only time I don't like a Roma is when it comes from Walmart, and has been shipped in from El Salvador green in "almost" frozen condition. It ruins the texture and flavor.

But a home grown Roma is all the tomato I need.

San Marzano are a very good plum tomato. The Amish Plum tomato is supposed to be good, too.
There is a Polish variety I grew once that was good also. They were huge. I forget the name.

Yeah, I guess when I say Roma, it is because they are the plum tomato I have experienced.

I would be happy to go to a tomato tasting if there was such a thing.
