Scout/Bush Rifles:

I'm liking this idea more and more. Basically a bolt or lever gun with some sort of sighting system for hunting and self defense. Simple and easy to maintain. It's not really a new idea, but IMHO, more of a returning to basics, and realizing that you don't need all the bells and whistles.

Why do people bother doing this with Nagants still? There's better choices since the market has dried up.

I like my Nagant and all, it's in great shape and shoots straight but I'd choose a modern rifle and round to carry around.

The story behind that one was that the barrel was bent, so he decided to experiment with it. ^^^^^^^^^^^

A lot of people do it with Moist Nuggets because that is what they have.

Personally I think an SKS would be perfect if you wanted to get back to the basics.

I dislike bolts guns, other than my big calibers like.338 and 50.

My cousin has the Ruger Scout and it's nice.

I've seen a few scout rifles in various forms on different forums over the years, the concept of a smaller, lightweight, easy to use and maintain weapon/tool makes more sense than a full or semi auto for a bushgun

I'd never given a bolt gun a second thought, but as I've been looking at this Scout/Bush Rifle idea, my mind has changed. Look at the British Enfield 303, it served for many decades and through many wars, so the bolt action has many merits. Again, if I could get my hands on one of these old bolts for a hundred bucks or less, I'd make a project out of one, but if it's going to cost me 3 to 4 hundred, i'd just pick up a modern bolt, probably in .223 simply for ammo availability.

Have you considered an old single shot,shotgun? You can get barrel inserts for various calibers and (going from memory of a Dave Canterbury video) can be converted to black power.
