I've been looking through the Cabella's firearm selection, whats the different between a rim fire and a center fire as far as deer hunting goes? Is a 308 okay? I'd be in Kentucky.

Is it unreasonable to be a complete novice, go out on the public land, kill a deer, dress it, and bring it home? I don't know ANYONE that actively hunts to show me the ropes.

I want to kill something and fill my freezer. Especially in Kentucky, I can get 4 deer for a $42 license.
In the Midwest slugs are a common legal takedown method because bottled necked cartridges like the .300 WinMag and the .30-06 have some range to it if a bullet misses the deer. Ohio allows straight walled cartridges like the .454 casual and the .44 magnum to hunt Deere with though

It’s all about the concentration of people in a small area. It makes .gov uneasy about bottlednecked cartridges because if someone misses a deer, that bullet is going to travel some distance.

In that case I would recommend a marlin 1894 in .44 mag with a forward mount long relief scout scope 2.5x single power. Or an 1895 in .45-70 set up the same way.

I signed up for a student hunters course in a couple weeks organized by the Kentucky Dept of Fish and Wildlife. It's an 8am to 5pm class on a saturday, looks like it's free. Hopefully this helps me figure out if this is something I want to do or not. I'll keep you guys posted. 10/27 is the date.

The course here is online. Takes a bit of time to get thru. Several nights. Then a 5 hour hands on gun handeling and shooting qualification course.

So I confirmed that everything, even range time and gun usage is provided free of charge. Apparently the license fees pay for safety training. So that's cool. They have online stuff here too, but it still requires range time to get the certificate.

These are rules that save lives. They might seem lame to you. But you need to know them , and alway have them in your mind. Accidents happen every day with firearms and there's no undoing some of it.

Besides, your course is going to stress these issues.
