I'm doing a Game of Thrones rewatch to prep for the final season.
End-Game Theory:
So I've always been intrigued by the constant use of the term "Valar Marghulis" - translation: "All men must die." At first I thought it was equivalent to the Latin term, "momento mori" (remember that you must die). Then for a while, I thought it would be cool if the end-game were that the women ruled: Dany Targyrean on her dragons breathing fire on the ice wall, melting it into a huge tidal wave.. Maybe Arya by her side. Strong women.
But the more I re-watch this show, I think the phrase should be taken literally: All men MUST die. Humans do not belong in this world.
Then who does?
My theory is that the White Walkers are the most deserving of the realm. They may even be the good guys.
The people in these kingdoms are deplorable: raping, murdering, flaying, beheading. Fighting over a throne of melted swords that, as Littlefinger pointed out, doesn't have the 1,000 swords as legend states. There's less than 200. Littlefinger goes on to say the realm is nothing but stories we tell each other until they're no longer a lie... they're like the 1,000 blades of the throne.
One of those stories handed down through the ages is that the White Walkers are evil. But who generated these stories? Were these tales told time and time again until they became truths?
Are the White Walkers any more evil than the humans? Both kill, both are battling for what they feel is their land by right. But whose land is it, really. Whose kingdom is it? The White Walkers have existed (sometimes sleeping under the ice) for ages. Maybe the kingdom is theirs. Maybe men forced them off their land and they want it back.
I was a huge fan of LOST. Things were not always as they seemed. Who you think are good guys were were actually bad, and visa versa. Same thing in many Twilight Zone episodes, huge fan of those. I loved the ones where the twist at the end makes you rethink what you just watched. When Ben from LOST said "We're the good guys", I was like - yeah, right. But the Others weren't the evil bunch as people were told. It was stories told time and again until they became truths.
So I'm rewatching the series with the thought that the humans are the scourge of the realm.
If I'm wrong, then my backup theory/hope for the series is that Dany & Jon Snow win - whatever winning looks like in the game, anyway.
