polio may be the weapon we need to kill cancer.

    First off, FUCK CANCER.

Anyway, I watched a special on 60 minutes about how the FDA just gave breakthrough status to a research team using a broken polio strain, repaired by common cold, to trick the body into eradicating cancer on its own. Pretty cool stuff.

A bold experiment from Duke University that uses the polio virus to fight a deadly form of brain cancer will now be fast-tracked by the FDA

Since rumor has it that the polio vaccine was what released cancer into humans, it's only fitting it should clean up the job.

My late sister was in a clinical trial for a drug that tricked the body, using the same concept. Immunotherapy. Sadly it didn't work for her - very aggressive cancer. But it's promising. Fucking cancer is smart, adaptable and stealth. It needs to be fought with something that recognizes these traits. Not something that breaks down the immune system, like chemo.

This particular trial was to suppress what's known as the Programmed Death Ligand, a protein which helps cancer bind, for lack of a better explanation. The treatments were far easier than any chemo or radiation. Your immune system is actually boosted during the process. Those who didn't know she had cancer were shocked, because she looked so healthy and beautiful throughout the trial, and even til the end. I have a lot of hope for this train of thought with fighting cancer. Even though my sister lost the battle, her involvement in the trial will help those going forward. That was important to her.

My grandmother had it. In fact, my father was born in an iron lung.
