    Doublethink :

It's an epidemic now and days.

    "Doublethink
is the act of simultaneously accepting two mutually contradictory beliefs as correct, often in distinct social contexts. Doublethink is related to, but differs from, hypocrisy and neutrality.

Somewhat related but almost the opposite is cognitive dissonance, where contradictory beliefs cause conflict in one's mind. Doublethink is notable due to a lack of cognitive dissonance — thus the person is completely unaware of any conflict or contradiction."

    SP: "Nowadays".

Also; it's been prevalent since the beginning of time. Socrates spent his time pulling it apart. The absence of cognitive dissonance is its most dangerous feature.

EG people who think smoking is just a habit, but go and buy a packet of cigarettes based on their nicotine content.

Who does that? I think you made that up. I've never met an addicted smoker who doesn't know they're addicted. Like ever. Is this something you saw on New Zealand TV or something?

        everyone does it.

I'll quit, they say. I'll just stop for 2 weeks and then I'll be fine.

I'll go on the patches, they say. When i've lost the habit of smoking, I'll be fine.

I smoked for 20 yrs Steve. You might prefer to troll me over something else.

I'm a smoker and I'm not trolling you. I've really never met another smoker who says they can quit anytime they want. A teen might say that, not an adult. Not one I've ever met, at least. Are people really that self-unaware in NZ?

I'm an ex smoker. That means I'm a smoker that got away. I got away largely by causing belief no. 1 to confront belief no. 2 in my brain.

I am the success story. I am not a failure story. So if I say I've noticed that smokers have a lot of doublethink, it's because I've noticed a lot of smokers have doublethink.

You, as a continuing smoker, probably have a million kinds of doublethink about smoking. you love it, you hate it, you need it, it's killing you... all of that. They are all internally inconsistent and do not survive the light of day when you haul them out and force them to sit next to each other.

I thought you were saying smokers are in denial. I don't know any who are. We all know it sucks to be addicted to smokes, we all wish we weren't, but we are. No cognitive dissonance involved.

All smokers are in denial, and it doesn't take much effort to scratch through to their internal walls, either. Smokers think they smoke for reasons they do not smoke. If they knew why they needed to smoke they would not need to smoke.

A smoker who fully understands smoking is a non smoker.

I'm a smoker. I'm 45 and have been a smoker since I was 11. I'm physically addicted to nicotine and psychologically addicted to the act of smoking, as a reward, where's the denial part?

Double think seems to be when you are unaware of the conflict of your views. Like hating social programs and being the first one to bitch about them, but the. Signing up for a prescription discount card without realizing that it is sponsored and paid for by federal grants. Being conflicted about something because you see merit in both sides is just being conflicted. It is not the same if you realize you are conflicted. I hate soda. It is horrible for me, and I hate being addicted to anything. But I drink it as I am typing. This is not double think because I KNOW I am conflicted or tortured about it.

You should try vaping as a safer alternative to cigarettes.

In political rhetoric, doublethink is always in use. A good example today is illegal aliens. People on the left spectrum, dems and some independants, will agree that a nation should have laws and enforcement to curtail people illegally entering and illegally staying the country and at the same time proclaim that their political opponents are 'racists' for actually proclaiming in public the desire to enforce immigration laws. The fear of being labeled by the sjw media, and letting it do the thinking for them, nuetralizes their rational processes.

It's very Orwellian. The thinking is done for us and even though we may know the facts are otherwise we take on the slogan as our opinion.

Many moons ago, I quit for a whole year. Came home on leave during Summer went on a family camping/fishing trip. I just had to have some chew.

Fishing and hunting is so much better with a dip between the cheek and gums lol

I come by it honest I had two great aunts that chewed, plus many men relatives of course. Aunts chewed TWIST tobacco, Silver Tip I think it was, god that's rough stuff. lol
