Consider how many ways that could be read.

Are you a protester that does hit and run gorilla style protests?

Are you an animal hater that can't stand Apes of any kind, and therefore protest gorillas?

You know..... I fight asian fires, so this is how my mind reads some of these posts.

The mother should be incarcerated, and the child raised in a meat-free environment, listening to Edie Brickell, and learning to tat doilies.
              I don't know.

It's a crappy situation, but children dart around and can be unpredictable. Lots of people saying she's a shitty parent, some saying she should have been shot. Reminds me of when we were kids, my mom was driving my sister and I, and right in front of us a child darted in the road and was hit by a car. My sister was very upset, started yelling at the driver... But my mother quieted my sister down, comforted the boy's mother.. And later, after the boy was taken away by ambulance (he was ok), my mother comforted the driver. My mother had six children - she knew what they're capable of.

My first thought was, why couldn't they just use tranquilizer darts? But a few experts said they can take some time to kick in, and in that time the gorilla could have killed the boy.

My only thought on the matter is that zoos should make it harder for anyone, no matter how small, to get into these enclosures.

In the old days, the top observatory of the Empire State Building was open. Now it looks like this.

                  .

I don't know enough about the mom to say she should get punished.

But, I have no problem with the Zoo's decision to shoot the gorilla. It sucks to have to do so, but that's that.

I agree with everything you said Star. I have been watching people all day say the mother should be shot. It is crazy. 4 year olds are slippery little buggers, they can do anything. I can't imagine the terror of seeing your child dragged around.

even in my vegetarian ways I think the zoo did the right thing

I think the zoo did the right thing too. Unbelievable how many people are quick to judge the mother. I guess there are a lot of 100% perfect parents out there.

Some years ago in the same state, Ohio, Jack Hannah was sought out for advice by state law enforcement when the man released his lions and tigers from his private zoo and then committed suicide. He was asked about tranquilizing the animals but advised the police to shoot them on site as they would easily kill an officer before the tranquilizer took effect and would likely be agitated by being shot with the dart. Jack said that a friend of his had been killed by an animal after it was shot with a tranquilizer dart.

I know that Jack Hannah loves animals and would have gladly saved those if he had been able to but human life must come first. People just don't have a clue as to the true nature of predators especially an alpha male.

I would also like to know how much meat that child had been allowed to eat in the days leading up to the event.

                              I don't know.
