A research vessel will explore a ghost from World War II Monday night: a sunken aircraft carrier that served in the war and later withstood nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll.

The USS Independence, a light aircraft carrier, was intentionally sunk off California in 1951, and on Monday evening Eastern time, viewers can tune into Nautiluslive.org to watch scientists explore the ship, which sits in 2,600 feet of water and is reportedly in good shape. The dive is slated to begin between 7 and 9 pm, EDT.

They are looking down the aft aircraft elevator now at a plane that may be either a Hellcat or a hell diver.

The plane that is in the aft elevator. It's been confirmed to be a Hellcat.

Lots of sponges have made the ship home as well as some corals and fishes. The crew said that they may have spotted a new species and that most were new to this region of the ocean.

"Resting in 2,600 feet of water off California's Farallon Islands, the carrier is "amazingly intact," said NOAA scientists, with its hull and flight deck clearly visible, and what appears to be a plane in the carrier's hangar bay."

The USS Independence CVL-22 (also CV-22) was a United States Navy light aircraft carrier, lead ship of her class and served during the Second World War. She was later used in the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests where she received significant damage during the Able and Baker nuclear blasts.

After being transported back to Pearl Harbor and San Francisco for study she was used to train sailors in decontamination. She was later sunk near the Farallon Islands in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary where she now rests. There was no one aboard when she was sunk.

Good. That kinda explains why it was sunk there, but why not in shallower waters to make a marine sanctuary? Monterrey bay out to the Farallons is a deep mofo! Contamination?
