Fusion probably isn't quite what we think, I tend to subscribe more to the electric universe theory, and under that umbrella, the electric sun. In this theory Fusion is not the heart of the star but rather takes place in filaments and the like where the forces needed for short term fusion occur. YMMV.
We could instead start up molten salt or thorium flouride reactors now and have clean risk free power. Not saying fusion research should stop or have less money, but I think we should be approaching this problem and theory from a couple or more directions.
